This would allow you to protect the system and prevent potential problems.  You could by default limit attachments to text, Microsoft Office Formats, Google Doc formats (for example).  This would stop people from attaching batch files, executables, SQL Queries...other file types that are potentially hazardous. 

I would have used this in my previous role.  Plus this functionality has been mentioned in a couple of recent RFPs.
